About Us

In 1997, the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration, Division of Mental Health and Addiction began the afterschool prevention initiative known as Afternoons R.O.C.K. in Indiana. The afterschool initiative developed from the need for supervised activities for youth between 3pm to 6pm, Afternoons R.O.C.K. in Indiana became a prevention initiative targeting youth 10 to 14 years of age.

Key Terms

A Program Supervisor is a prevention professional who provides direct, on‑site supervision on a daily basis for a Direct Prevention Services Program and who provides direct prevention services to participating youth.

Program Supervisors are committed to keep kids free from alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.

A Program Supervisor must possess the Qualified Prevention Professional (QPP) or Certified Prevention Professional (CPP) designation from the Indiana Association of Prevention Professionals

There are provisions for criminal background checks to be conducted on the program supervisor (and anyone age or over18 who may be assisting with the program).

The acronym "R.O.C.K." represents the mission of the program to provide Recreation, Object lessons, Culture and values and Knowledge thru focused and supportive prevention activities designed to teach youth about social and media influences, conflict resolution and refusal/resistance skills, gang and violence prevention and the structuring of leisure time to be free of alcohol, tobacco and other drug use. Since 1997, the Division of Mental Health and Addiction (DMHA), in contract with the Indiana Prevention Resource Center (IPRC) at Indiana University, has been working with 14 Local Prevention Services Coalitions across the state of Indiana to bring their prevention programs to targeted youth in all 92 counties within Indiana.

Afternoons R.O.C.K. in Indiana is funded by the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration, Division of Mental Health and Addiction (DMHA) through the SAMHSA Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment (SAPT) Block Grant CFDA 93.959 & the Indiana Problem Gamblers’ Assistance Fund.

R.O.C.K. Team—DMHA Staff
David Bozell, MPA, serves as the Bureau Chief for the Bureau for Mental Health Promotion and Addiction Prevention at the Division of Mental Health and Addiction (DMHA). Mr. Bozell holds a Masters in Public Administration from Indiana State University. His primary responsibilities are the State oversight of the Afternoons R.O.C.K. in Indiana program, the Strategic Prevention Framework-State Incentive Grant program, the L.E.A.D. Initiative, and other alcohol, tobacco and other drug prevention efforts funded by DMHA.

Ramzi Nimry, BA is the Special Projects Coordinator at the Indiana Division of Mental Health and Addiction (DMHA). Mr. Nimry holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communications and a minor in Psychology from Indiana University-Indianapolis. His primary responsibilities include secondary oversight of the Afternoons R.O.C.K. in Indiana program, the L.E.A.D. Initiative, and other alcohol, tobacco and other drug prevention efforts funded by DMHA.

R.O.C.K. Team—IPRC Staff
Carla Janáe Brown, Ph.D.(c), C.H.E.S.,C.P.P is the Evaluation Specialist for Afternoons R.O.C.K. in Indiana at the Indiana Prevention Resource Center. Ms. Brown has a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Cincinnati and a Master of Science degree from Indiana University Bloomington. She is currently finishing her Ph.D. in Health Behavior at Indiana University Bloomington. She is certified by the Indiana Association of Prevention Professionals and the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing. Her primary responsibilities include program evaluation and design, which serves program providers through an objective measure for gauging program success and areas for improvement.

Mallori L. DeSalle, MA, NCC is the Community Prevention Specialist at the Indiana Prevention Resource Center at Indiana University-Bloomington. Mrs. DeSalle has a Bachelor of Science degree from Nebraska Wesleyan University and a Master of Arts degree from Truman State University. Her primary responsibilities include providing program design and technical assistance services, as well as monitoring for Afternoons R.O.C.K. in Indiana programs.

Cindy Flynn is the Contract Compliance & Fiscal Officer for the Afternoons R.O.C.K. in Indiana program at the Indiana Prevention Resource Center, Indiana University Bloomington. Her primary responsibilities include providing assistance to Afternoons R.O.C.K. Program Directors, verification of proper program procedures and paperwork, and approval of fiscal claims for youth entering and completing the programs throughout the state.
